Event Description

What can be learned from the spectacular success of Machel Montano, the leading figure in Soca music over the past forty years? Moreover, how has a Black female manager literally “managed” to pave the way for this artist’s success in the male-dominated music industry? Author Elizabeth Montano will speak with ethnomusicologist Jocelyne Guilbault about her experience as a manager in and outside the West Indies. American and Caribbean Studies Chair and Professor in the Departments of Film & Media and Spanish & Portuguese at UC Berkeley. Her work focuses on photography, film and contemporary art, critical theory and aesthetics of both Spanish America and Brazil.
