La serie New Vocabularies, New Grammars: Imagining Other Worlds se centrará en críticos, críticas e intelectuales que, en sus formas de escritura y pensamiento, deshacen las divisiones y separaciones entre disciplinas y géneros, y entre la acción política y el compromiso intelectual. En esta práctica de (cruce de) fronteras, se pueden imaginar nuevos lenguajes y gramáticas para significar otros mundos, para resistir y oponerse a la violencia impuesta por las epistemes coloniales. Estos estudiosos, críticos y actores políticos ofrecen el dinamismo de la indeterminación, invitando a prácticas que unen palabras y mundos.
En este primer evento, Cristina Rivera Garza estará en conversación con la directora de CLAS, Natalia Brizuela y Alfonso Fierro, candidato a doctorado en el departamento de Español y Portugués. La Dra. Rivera Garza, es Profesora Distinguida de Estudios Hispanos y directora del programa de Escritura Creativa de la Universidad de Houston. Es la premiada autora de seis novelas, tres libros de no ficción, tres colecciones de cuentos y cinco colecciones de poesía.
Event Description
The New Vocabularies, New Grammars: Imagining Other Worlds series will focus on critics and intellectuals who in their writing and thinking undo the divisions and separations between disciplines and genres, as well as divisions between political action and intellectual engagement. In this practice of border/crossing, new languages and grammars can be imagined to signify other worlds to resist and oppose the imposed violence of colonial epistemes. These scholars, critics, and political actors offer the dynamism of indeterminacy, inviting practices that bring together words and worlds.
In this first event, Cristina Rivera Garza will speak in conversation Natalia Brizuela, CLAS Chair, and Alfonso Fierro, PhD candidate in the Spanish & Portuguese department. Dr. Rivera Garza a Distinguished Professor in Hispanic Studies and the Director of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Houston. She is an award- winning author of six novels, three non-fiction books, three collections of short stories, and five collections of poetry.

Alfonso Fierro es candidato a doctorado en el departamento de Español y Portugués, con Énfasis Designado en Teoría Crítica. Desde el 2018, Fierro tiene una columna de opinión mensual en la revista de arquitectura mexicana "Arquine".
Cristina Rivera Garza es autora, traductora y crítica. Es Profesora Distinguida y Directora del Doctorado en Escritura Creativa de la Universidad de Houston. MacArhur Fellow 2020-25. Premio José Donoso; Chile, 2021; Premio Nuevo León Alfonso Reyes; 2021.

Natalia Brizuela is the Class of 1930 Chair of the Center for Latin American Studies, and a professor of Film & Media and Spanish & Portuguese at UC Berkeley, with affiliations in the Gender and Women’s Studies and the Program in Critical Theory.
Alfonso Fierro is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese, with a Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory. Since 2018, Fierro writes a monthly op-ed column in the Mexican architecture magazine “Arquine.”
Cristina Rivera Garza is an author, translator, and critic. She is a Distinguished Professor and Director of the Doctorate Program in Creative Writing at the University of Houston. MacArthur Fellow 2020-25. José Donoso Award; Chile, 2021; Nuevo León Alfonso Reyes Award; 2021.
