Abstract:

Diego Rivera regarded his mural cycle at the Detroit Institute of Arts as his finest achievement in the fresco medium. Graham W. J. Beal will discuss the personal, political and economic motivations that lay behind the creation of this complex and controversial work. Graham W. J. Beal has served as director at the Joslyn Art Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and, since 1999, at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
