Guatemala Scholar-Activism: Linking Scholarship and Struggle

Abstract:

Recorded May 11, 2021

Below is the original description of the event.

How can we more effectively link scholarship and struggles for justice in the global south?

Join Berkeley's Guatemala Scholar-Activist Working Group for a conversation about current human rights challenges in Guatemala, and ways Indigenous communities are organizing for justice. Iduvina Hernández will discuss current political struggles in Guatemala. Giovanni Batz will discuss his research and work in solidarity with Maya-Ixil and Land Defenders. Finally, we will hear from the Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala about ongoing cross-border solidarity initiatives.

Giovanni Batz is currently a 2020-2021 President’s Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Native American Studies at the University of California, Davis.

Iduvina Hernández is a journalist, human rights defender, and political analyst specialized in Security Sector Reform. She is the founder of Security in Democracy (SEDEM) and a member of the Human Rights Convergence (Guatemala).

The Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA) works to build and strengthen ties between the people of the United States and Guatemala in the global struggle for justice, human dignity, and respect for the Earth.

The Guatemala Scholar-Activist Working Group is a network of university students, professors, researchers and NGO partners. It provides a forum for collaboration, shared analysis, and other work in solidarity with land and human rights defenders, Indigenous communities, and broader social movements. We invite students, faculty, and community partners to come learn about this newly formed working group and to join us!
