This forum will engage with the right wing turn in Chile, given the recent presidential elections in 2025. Debates are ongoing about fundamental issues such as updating the country’s constitution, modifying neoliberal economic policies, and the rights of Indigenous peoples. Historian Claudio Alvarado Lincopi and sociologist and feminist activist Javiera Manzi Araneda will reflect on the country’s contemporary political and social landscape, situating current debates within the country’s complex historical trajectory.

Claudio Alvarado Lincopi is a historian with a doctorate in Architecture and Urban Studies from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He is a researcher in the Curatorial Department of the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino. He was a fellow of the Fundación Neruda and received the Premio Municipal Juegos Literarios Gabriela Mistral in 2009. Most recently, he received the Premio de Ensayo del Ministerio de las Culturas, las Artes y el Patrimonio and the Premio de Investigación y Humanidades del Ministerio de las Culturas, las Artes y el Patrimonio in 2022. Alvarado Lincopi’s first film, Mapurbekistán – a film-essay about the Mapuche diaspora, the city of Santiago, and the history of Chile – will premiere soon.
Javiera Manzi Araneda is a doctoral candidate in international history at the London School of Economics and Political Science in London. A sociologist and archivist from the Universidad de Chile, she has been a member of the Red Conceptualismos del Sur since 2012. Manzi Araneda’s research focuses on the intersections of visual culture, politics, and social movements in Chile and Latin America. She is co-author of the book Resistencia Gráfica. Dictadura en Chile (LOM, 2016) and editor of ¡La Huelga General Feminista Va! Historias de un proceso en curso (Tiempo Robado, 2021). In 2024, she was co-curator of the exhibition Re vueltas gráficas. Multitudes para cambiar la vida at the Centro Cultural La Moneda. She is currently co-director of the platform ModernismoLatinoamericano.org and a member of the Coordinadora Feminista 8M.
Natalia Brizuela (moderator) is the Class of 1930 Chair of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and a Professor in the Departments of Film & Media and Spanish & Portuguese at UC Berkeley.
